According to WebMD.com, “Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a viral illness that causes sores in or on the mouth and on the hands, feet, and sometimes the buttocks and legs.”, “most common in children, but can also occur in adults.”
Caused by a virus from the Enterovirus class (which includes Coxsackie A virus) infected individuals can pass the virus to others by coming into close touch with them. Or the virus can be picked up by an individual when he touches an object that’s previously been handled by an infected person.
The initial symptoms generally mimic a cold or flu onset, and can include fatigue, sore throat and fever. But these are usually followed within a few days by sores or blisters on the mouth, hands, feet and sometimes the buttocks.
Will colloidal silver help fight the symptoms of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease?

Many people claim it’s worked wonders for them.
A member named Patti R. recently posted:
“I used colloidal silver to treat my son 24 hrs after onset of hand, foot, mouth disease (a virus). By 36 hours after treating 2-3 times a day of 1 tsp dose and gargling, all blisters in mouth were gone and he was eating!!! Colloidal silver WORKS!!”
When I wrote back and asked her for more details, she replied:
“My son was about 8 yrs old. Symptoms began with a high fever on a Tuesday at 5:00 pm. The following day, when I returned home from work, I saw the blisters in his throat and thought it was strep.
But I took him to the doctor at that time, who then diagnosed it as hand, foot, mouth disease.
When we returned home, I began a dose of 1 tsp silver (swallow) and to gargle and rinse mouth with it also. He had 2 doses that night and 2 before lunch on Thursday. I saw him at lunchtime on Thursday and offered him ANYTHING to eat…..milkshake, anything. He said no, his mouth hurt.
When I returned home from work that afternoon at 5:00 pm, I asked him if there was anything he would like to eat for supper (believing he still couldn’t eat). He responded “French fries” and he was back to normal.
My husband and I both have BS degrees, and were teachers in the science fields. I have been using colloidal silver ever since. I would take it when stomach virus would run rampant in the school…I never got sick. I am a very big believer in colloidal silver.”
So apparently, success was obtained by giving the eight year old child three teaspoons full of colloidal silver the day after the outbreak began, and two teaspoons full of colloidal silver the next day. And then the child was back to normal.
More Experiential Evidence
On the EarthClinic.com website (one of my favorite natural health websites), they have a page on “Hand Foot and Mouth Disease Symptoms and Remedies” which states, “Colloidal silver treats the condition and prevents it from returning.”
One of their readers commented:
“I had a friend whose daughter had contracted Hand Foot and Mouth disease at daycare. We had spoken to a few people and someone suggested trying Colloidal Silver. I told her to try it because the doctor would not give her anything.
Within two days her daughter was a lot better and the symptoms of the Hand Foot and Mouth had gone. My friend is still giving her daughter the Colloidal Silver to stop it from coming back. We have looked into colloidal silver and apparently it’s great for all viral infections and internal parasites!”
Another reader commented:
“My 8 year old son contracted Hand/foot/mouth from school…Had large sore blisters on the side of his tongue.
I gave him 2 doses of colloidal silver for two days. It stopped more blisters from forming and the others began to heal immediately.

On the Raising Natural Kids blog page on Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, one reader wrote in:
“Colloidal silver got rid of the blisters within 24 hours.”
On the Modern Alternative Mama website, a reader commented about her 9-year old son’s case of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, saying:
“…my 9 year old son picked this up I’m guessing at the skating rink for a birthday party. He complains of the blisters being itchy as well. We are using colloidal silver and it kept the blisters from spreading. They never made it to his mouth, thank God!! You may want to give it a try.”
On the Wellness and Toys website, in an article titled “Hand Foot and Mouth Disease Treatment and Simple Solutions for Relief,” the author states:
“Colloidal silver fights viruses and can be a good treatment. You can put it in a spray bottle and spray the blisters and you can swish in the mouth and gargle and then swallow to help internally. Most report rapid recovery using colloidal silver.”
And a reader on that same web page commented:
“…as soon as my daughter started with a fever we put her on colloidal silver. A few days later she had a few spots on her legs. Then some on her face, hands, and feet. Thankfully the spots never got very big or bothered her and I know it is because we had her on colloidal silver from the moment she had a fever.
And thankfully it never went around to the rest of us! We also put silver on each spot as well. After seeing what some other kids went through, hers was nothing compared to what it could have been!”
On the From Faye blog, in the comments on an article about Natural Treatments for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, one reader stated:
“My 9 year old has this at the moment. Monday, his hands had blisters. Tuesday, his feet. Wednesday, his legs. This morning, his arms and stomach. I’m afraid tomorrow they will be in his mouth. We are now trying colloidal silver. I will update to let you know how/if it works.”
Five days later that same reader commented again:
“The colloidal silver kept the blisters from spreading any further! No mouth sores!!!”
So there are clearly some interesting experiential success stories demonstrating that colloidal silver is indeed helpful for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks.
Of course, this should not surprising, since Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks are caused by a virus, and thousands of colloidal silver users worldwide have testified that colloidal silver has been extremely effective against a wide variety of other types of viral outbreaks, including:
- Molluscum contagiosum outbreaks
- Viral wart outbreaks
- Shingles outbreaks
- Herpes simplex outbreaks
I have to emphasize here that there’s practically zero clinical research evidence for the use of colloidal silver against viral outbreaks such as Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. Nor is there much in vivo clinical evidence (i.e., human studies) for the use of colloidal silver against any other type of viral outbreak, either.
But if you click on the above links, you can read the articles associated with each type of viral outbreak mentioned, and there you’ll see that in spite of the dearth of clinical evidence, people nevertheless swear by the use of colloidal silver for such viral outbreaks.
Treating Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease With Colloidal Silver
For topical viral outbreaks such as Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, as well as others, many people tell me they’ve had great success using a good topical commercial colloidal silver gel product such as ASAP Ultimate Skin & Body Care Gel with 24 ppm colloidal silver, or Curad Silver Solution First Aid Antimicrobial Gel with 55 ppm silver chloride.
What’s more, the Curad Silver Solution First Aid Antimicrobial Gel, which is made by the famous band-aid maker, is often available at Walgreen’s pharmacies, as well.

If you can’t obtain a good, commercial colloidal silver gel for the topical treatment, or make your own colloidal silver gel, you can always apply any standard liquid colloidal silver product topically, using either a pump spray bottle to spray the topical outbreaks four or five times a day and allowing it to air dry, or simply by applying some liquid colloidal silver to a cotton ball and dabbing it gently onto the viral blisters multiple times a day and allowing it to air dry.
However, many people swear by the topical gels for the viral skin outbreaks, since the gel tends to keep the silver in direct contact with the skin eruptions for a longer period of time compared to simply spraying them with a liquid colloidal silver product.
